๐ In-depth analysis
The SONOFF ZBMINIR2 Zigbee Extreme represents a significant evolution in the brand's lineup of smart relay switches. Designed to fit behind existing wall switches, this compact module allows for remote control and automation via the eWeLink ecosystem. Its primary appeal lies in its Zigbee connectivity, which typically offers a more stable and local mesh network compared to standard Wi-Fi alternatives. This model is marketed as an 'Extreme' version, suggesting a focus on a smaller footprint to accommodate tight electrical boxes where space is often at a premium.
With a high volume of orders and a very strong buyer rating, the market reception appears overwhelmingly positive. The device integrates with major voice assistants like Alexa and Google Home, provided you have a compatible Zigbee hub. While the build quality and software support from Sonoff are generally reliable, users should remember that this is a component for DIY electrical installation, requiring a basic understanding of home wiring to set up safely and effectively.
โ Pros
Exceptional buyer rating suggests high reliability and performance out of the box.
Zigbee protocol provides better network stability and lower power consumption than Wi-Fi.
Compact design is specifically engineered to fit into cramped electrical junction boxes.
Seamless integration with the eWeLink app and major voice control platforms.
Cons and cautions
Requires a separate Zigbee gateway, adding to the initial setup cost if you do not already own one.
Installation involves handling mains electricity, which carries inherent risks if not done correctly.
The 'Extreme' designation might imply a trade-off in maximum power handling compared to larger relay models.
This analysis is written with an AI model from the product data (name, category, price, rating and orders), not from a hands-on test. How we choose and score
Who it's for: This is ideal for smart home enthusiasts who already own a Zigbee gateway and want to modernize their existing light switches without replacing the external hardware. It suits those looking for reliable, local control that reduces Wi-Fi congestion.
Who should skip it: It is not suitable for renters who cannot modify their wiring or users without a Zigbee hub. Those uncomfortable working with high-voltage electrical circuits should hire a professional rather than attempting a solo installation.
๐ Check before you buy
Confirm if your specific Zigbee hub or coordinator is fully compatible with the ZBMINIR2 model.
Verify the maximum load capacity with the seller to ensure it can handle your specific lighting or appliance setup.
Ask the seller if a neutral wire is required for this specific 'Extreme' version or if it supports no-neutral installations.
Check the exact physical dimensions to ensure it will fit inside your specific wall box depth.
๐ฐ Value verdict: Given the high order count and the near-perfect rating, this product offers excellent value at its current price point. The significant discount makes it a competitive choice for scaling a smart home. You are paying for a proven, well-reviewed device from a reputable brand in the automation space.
๐ก Tips
Always turn off the main circuit breaker before attempting to install or move the relay.
If installing multiple units, label your wires clearly to avoid confusion during the pairing process.
Ensure your Zigbee hub is placed centrally to maintain a strong mesh signal across all installed switches.
Questions about this product
Does this switch work directly with Wi-Fi?
No, this is a Zigbee device and requires a compatible Zigbee hub or bridge to connect to your network and the app.
Can I use this with a two-way switch setup?
Sonoff Mini units generally support two-way wiring, but you should verify the specific wiring diagram with the seller for the ZBMINIR2 model.
What happens if my internet goes down?
Because it uses Zigbee, local automations and physical switch control should continue to function even without an active internet connection, depending on your hub's capabilities.
